Best Place to Buy Cheese?

Leaving in less than one week, staying for 9 days, looking to bring some of the wonderful cheese home. Need to know if allowed to bring back into the United States? Staying in the Centre, by Dam Square, need to know where I can find a good cheese shop to purchase my goodies, or is it better to buy at the airport? As well, doesn't the cheese need to be refrigerated?

We stayed on Runstraat and there was a great cheese shop called de Kaaskamer. This is in the 9 streets area. They will vacuum pack cheese so you are allowed to bring it back to the US. They are very friendly, and you can sample the cheese before purchase.

So long as you get hard cheese and don't have it out too long it was travel well. There was also cheese available at the airport, but I didn't look carefully to see how much selection there was. The drawback is being unable to sample before buying.

hi Tina , yep getting close !! I dont know the shop mentioned above but it sounds fine. There is also a big specialist cheese shop on Damstraat , just up from Gouchos.

Its several years since I was in the airport but there was always a limited selection of cheese available. I dont know of any import restrictions to the US but it will be best to make sure ...

Refrigarated !!! shame on you . lol ... never put good cheese in a fridge....see you soon ..

I wholeheartedly agree with Doodles about deKaaskamer on Runstraat. Amazing shop, amazing and helpful staff, sample anything you are considering buying, and they vacuum pack it, which makes it perfectly legal to bring home! We brought some amazing Spanish bleu cheese, aged Gouda, and other cheeses home, and they survived the trip just fine!

And, NO, cheese does not necessarily need to be refrigerated. In fact, in many homes in Europe, it is left out on the countertop....especially the soft cheeses such as brie.

FYI there is Edam, and various (do not recall seeing the very old one though) Gouda cheeses at the airport. Better to buy it elsewhere, so you may gey the strength and size desired. If you taste and enjoy the marvelous Amsterdamer cheese, they sell it in big chunks already vacuum sealed at the airport, so you would not need to log it around in your luggage until the very last minute.

Also worth trying is the Albert Cuyp market where there are a good number of stalls.

Cheese aside, it is well worth a visit.
