Early in the morning, afternoon or no such thing as less crowded. We planned to visit in early August.

Monday mornings are usually quieter but yes any morning earlier on.
The evenings at the VG are supposed to be quiet.
Avoid Wednesdays. School excursions can be on any given day but Wednesdays are the most common choice for schools.
“When going to the Rijksmuseum we went around 1 pm in the afternoon and there was basically no line.”
1 PM is just about one of the busiest times in the museum.
If you want to enjoy the museum in some peace and quiet, you should make sure you are there right when it opens with a pre-bought e-ticket in hand. Go up to the Gallery of Honours as soon as you enter, so you can enjoy the Vermeers and Rembrandts by yourself.
