Train station barriers

I gather from some recent posts that more train stations have now been fitted with barriers.

Does anyone know how this works with tickets issued outside the Netherlands - especially print-at-home ones?

Yep QR codes on the ticket. I've used mine from both bahn.de and b-europe.com.

Not all gates have a scanner that can scan an eticket. You need to look for a gate with a glass plate scanner, not one with an oval scanner. The gates that can scan an eticket have a sign that says “scan ticket”.
