I arrive in Zurich at 8pm on Thursday, July 31st and depart sometime on Saturday, August 2nd. I was doing a little research, and I realized that National Day is August 1st and Street Parade is August 2nd. I can't decide if this is a good thing or a bad thing, in terms of experiencing Zurich for the first time. Will a lot of stuff be closed on August 1st for the holiday? On the flip side, will there be fun public celebrations going on that you don't get to see every day?
I have to be on a Viking river cruise on August 2nd that departs from Basel at 7pm. I was planning on leaving Zurich in the morning on August 2nd to spend the day in Basel before the boat departs. Street Parade looks like it could be interesting, although it doesn't start until 1pm. Is it worth seeing, or should I stick to the original plan of spending the day in Basel?
