Early flight - hotel in Lucerne or Zurich?

Husband and I are flying out of Zurich at 10 a.m. on a Thursday. We'll be in Lucerne on Wednesday. Can we make it by train with enough time for an international flight? Or Should we stay in Zurich? If so any advice on a Zurich hotel that's easy access to airport train?

Thanks!

See sbb.ch/en for train times.

The first train of the morning from Luzern gets to Zurich Airport at 06:13.

There are numerous trains from Lucerne to Zurich Airport and first one departs 0455hrs and if you go to www.sbb.ch/en/home.html and input Lucerne to Zurich Airport with date and approx departure time you will get a list to choose from. No booking needed but look for a train with 0 changes or you will have to change at Zurich main station.

Moving to Zurich the day before will only save about an hour travel but you may feel better for being closer to the airport. Zurich main station to the airport is around 10 to 15 mins in the train.

Train Lucerne to Zurich airport takes roughly 60 to 80 minutes - with first direct train leaving Lucerne at 4:55 (am)

So technically feasible.

Close to all flights out of Zurich are international, but time required to arrive at airport depends on destination country and gates (minimum from 15 to 30 minutes for check-in to gate)

Maybe not applicable, but worth to know: web check-in (print yourself your boarding card); railway check-in (check-in at several railway stations) and evening check-in (not really an option if you stay the evening before leaving in Lucerne) are available for some airlines flying out of Zurich.

Swiss Federal Railways services are reliable - but there is a minimum risk of trains being late or other problems. So plan at least some reserve for that trip - and you can spend the additional available time at the airport for shopping (chocolate for instance ....)

While the chance of not making your flight coming from Luzern is minimal, it's still nice to know you are within a taxi ride if necessary - at least for me! Besides, Zurich is a lovely small city worth a nice walk on your last afternoon and evening and it's so easy to get to the airport from the center of the city so you could stay at the airport or stay in the city center.

Hope this gives you something to consider!

I agree. However we will only have that afternoon to see either Lucerne or Zurich. We will be in Wengen for 2 days then have the one day for travel and sight seeing before catching flight early the next day. I guess I was choosing to spend the few hours in Lucerne instead of Zurich. But don't want to be too hectic for our flight. Do you agree?

Luzern is lovely, too. Only you can make your choices and you could always move on to Zurich in the evening so that you are close for the morning. The odds that you have a rail problem and miss your flight are truly small so staying in Luzern is not a risk in reality.

Have a great trip!

Are you traveling from Wengen - Interlaken to Zurich via Brünig-Lucerne?

In this case even with just an afternoon available, I would consider a stop for a short Lucerne tour. Imho such a main tour can be done in an hour (lake-front is next to railway station, so is the old bridge and most of the real beautiful house-fronts). Even with a full afternoon and evening, you would not have enough time for much more.

With such an hour stop in Lucerne you should still have enough time for the hour trip to Zurich and spend the evening there.

Imho the question is also to get up early in Zurich for catching your flight - or very early in Lucerne ....

We had a flight leaving Zurich at 10 in the morning on a Sunday. We were staying at the Stoller Mercure on Badenerstrasse. It took us 10 minutes to walk to the Hardbrucke train station, and then another 10 minutes to the airport on the S16 train. We left the hotel at 06:00, took the 06:17 train and were in the airport just after 06:30. That was more than enough time for our 10:00 flight to Toronto.
