What most efficient transport from Zurich to Amsterdam?

Dear Expert,

I and my husband will travel to Switzerland on 7 - 11 July, we will start from Geneva, and end the trip in Zurich.

On 12 July night fly back from Amsterdam to Indonesia.

Please kindly give advise for the most efficient transportation from Zurich to Amsterdam, and considering the budget, we don't mind to use the train.

Please also advise how to purchase the ticket since this is our first time to go to Switzerland (should we buy on line or direct purchase at the nearest station). we already checked to SBB, but still not sure with the route.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Warm Regards,

Cathy

Hi, Cathy, and welcome to TA! This is one instance where you would likely be better to fly. It's over 9 hours to Amsterdam by train. Flights from Basel (just one hour from Zurich by train) are sometimes less expensive so you might want to check.

You can get all the train timetables in English on the Swiss Rail website

www.sbb.ch/en

Hope this helps.

One-way flights are typically (and unexplainably) very expensive.

Usually the only way around this is to fly with low cost airlines that price by flight - such as easyjet, Ryanair, and so on...

For flights from Basel - look at easyjet.com. They do fly into Zurich, but only from London. An option is to change your routing and look at Easyjet from Geneva.

The other option is to buy a RETURN ticket on a commercial airline (Swiss, KLM,...) , and then just "walk away" from the return portion of the ticket. Of course if you book such a ticket then you should find the cheapest return date within a month and use that - as the date and time for the "unused return" are arbitrary. This will cost you a little more than Easyjet, but will give you greater flexibility in terms of airports and scheduling.

OR - as kileysmom said - there is the 9hr trainride - which actually costs about the same as a strategically inexpensive RETURN flight ticket on Swiss.

Hope this helps.
