Zurich to Zermatt

Hi,

We only have a few days in Zurich @ end of Oct, Is it possible to do day trip to Zermatt & Matterhorn, thinking early morning train from Zurich to Zermatt then onto Matterhorn (not sure which best option for this) then back to Zermatt, then zurich, looking at train timetables it looks like 3.5 hrs each way zurich to zermatt. Is this do able in your opinion? will weather be a factor @ this time of year?

Weather is a factor. We were in Zermatt for three days the end of August. It raned for three days. We finally got a view of the Matterhorn on the last evening. Some how would be wise to check the weather before you take the long train ride or you my be disappointed.

Hi, it's about 3/5 hours each way by train from Zurich to Zermatt. The fare is about 232 francs return in 2nd class unless you have a rail pass or other discount pass. I would definitely check the Zermatt webcams and weather forecast before setting off because the weather is critical when you have only one day. You can look at the webcams on the Zermatt website

www.zermatt.ch

You don't go up onto the Matterhorn unless you are actually climbing. The mountain is visible from many places in the village and from many places on the mountains surrounding Zermatt. You can take another train from Zermatt up to the top at Gornergrat - gorgeous views of not only the Matterhorn but many surrounding mountains. You can also take the cable cars from the village up onto the mountains - the views from the to of te cable car to te Klein Matterhorn are just spectacular. There is information on all of this on the Zermatt website.

You can get all the train information for getting from Zurich to Zermatt and back again on the Swiss Rail website - in English

www.sbb.ch/en

Be sure to uncheck the half fare box when checking fares as it defaults to quoting a half fare so it is confusing.

Hope this helps.
