Zurich- Recommend Hotel/Attraction

Hi,

I and my husband plan to visit Zurich over the next weekend. We want to cover the top attractions. As we plan to spend the entire time out exploring & sightseeing, we are looking for a hotel just to spend the night. We are looking for something nice & simple not anything fancy, if possible then nearby airport/rail station.

Also If anybody can suggest what places to see. We plan to go to Rhine falls & Lindt chocolate factory.

Visit Rhine falls, Schaffhausen, walk the old city, go to the lake area and take a boat ride. If time permits go to Uetliberg or alternatively to the Zoo.

You cannot visit the Lindt chocolate factory. However there is a Lindt shop in the vicinity which is open from 10:00 to 17:00 on Saturday and remains closed on Sunday.

If you want to see the Swiss mountains go to the very scenic lake Lucerne. An easy day trip from Zurich could for example be: Zurich to Arth-Goldau, mountain train to the top of the Rigi (great view, spend some time on the top, good place for easy walks), mountain train to Vitznau, one hour boat ride to Lucerne, spend some time in the city, then back to Zurich.

For timetables of all kinds of means of public transport (train, boat, busses, cable cars etc) see www.sbb.ch/en

Thanks for the great idea Mube! Can you please tell me if this can be done in a day? We have never been to Zurich before and unsure of distances and how long the transit times are.

Also, this may be a silly question, but are the mountain train rides scenic (as opposed to a basic mass transportation option)?

What Mube has dsecribed above IS a day trip. But mountains depend very much on the weather so check before you go. You need relatively clear skies. Otherwise go to either Luzern OR Basel for the day. Basel has over 40 museums and a very extensive old town (very old - back to 13th century!!). Luzern has the Transport Museum which is fascinating and a small but pretty old town. OR go toBern which is a total gem of a place. here are some links for walking tours in Basel, Bern and Zürich:

IF you do go to the Rhine Falls then also spend some time in Schaffhausen which again has a beautiful old centre. So - on the same route - does Winterthur.

Finally - timings! Zürich to Bern, Luzern OR Basel is all about an hour. Bit less to Bern. Same to Rhine Falls (bit more). There are frequent trains to all of them from the Zürich HB station. For Rhine Falls you can either go to Schaffhausen and take a local bus or take the train to either Schloss Laufen am Rhein OR Neuhausen am Rhein. For schedules, fares etc;
