Restaurant tips, please.

When researching for our upcoming trip to Zürich (and Basel), I have learned that there are at least two dishes we will have to try; Kalbsgeschnetzeltes and cheese fondue. Can anyone recommend the best places in Zürich to try these dishes?

For cheese fondue there are a few restaurants which are specialized. You just have to know that they are all mostly frequented by tourists as the Swiss normally prefer to share their fondue at home with some friends! Some addresses: Restaurant Adler (on Hirschenplatz, in the heart of the lively part of the old town, called Niederdorf), Walliser Keller on Zaehringerstrasse (on the edge of Niederdorf), Walliser Kanne on Lintheschergasse (close to railway station and Bahnhofstrasse). For Geschnetzeltes and Roesti the best place to try would probably be a 'Zunfthaus' - a traditional restaurant owned by a guild. For instance Zunft zur Schmiden (Niederdorf), Zunft zur Schmiden (Limmatquai) or Zunft zur Waag (Muensterhof, beside church of Fraumuenster, very elegant - you better dress up!). No guarantee though that the listed addresses all serve that dish - you better check it out before!

Hi Herna,

Bierhalle Kropf (In Gassen, near Parade Platz) is one of my favourites for traditional Swiss dishes. The food is good but the carved wood interior of the restaurant is what leaves a lasting impression.

Pinte Vaudoise (Hotel Villette, Kruggasse) is a good choice for inexpensive fondue.

If you want to try something a bit different why not check out the fondue tram (literally fondue served on a converted tram whilst it meanders through Zurich). Details here, in German unfortunately:

Or if you will be in Zurich before 17th Nov check out the Wine Boat Festival (http://www.expovina.ch) where you can sample some wine then get fondue on one of the boats.

Have a good trip.
