Restaurant - Geneva Cornavin or Montreux

Dear Friends.

Hope you are all fine.

I am visiting montreux on 23rd June with my family (Wife and Kid). We are coming from Paris by TGV train and the train will arrive in Geneva Cornavin station @ 12:15 PM. My question is:

1. Where to take our lunch in Cornavin or in Montreux?. reason?. is there any nice indian restaurant / arabic restaurant in Cornavin/ Montreux?. (economical/ budget)

2. How long need to walk to get montreux train (from cornavin station) - i am travelling with luggage and kid

thanks in advance

regards

naaz

There is a restaurant very near the station that specialises in Tandoori dishes and which is quite good. Here is a link - the site seems only to be in French though!

http://www.gandhi.ch/

You would have to check your bags at the station and there are lots of lockers for this purpose.

Trains to Montreux run twice an hour from Geneva^s cornavin station. You will arrive on platform 8 or 9 in the French sector. Walk through Customs and then look for a yellow poster on the wall with a learge heading "Départs" This will give yuo the time AND the platform number for Montreux. I think I am right in saying it is platform 4. I would not worry too much about which train to take. Just show up and wait for the next one. One per hour is marginally faster than the other... but not by much. And do not be temped to take a train to lausanne and change there for Montreux as you will end up waiting for the next train to Montreux that you could have taken anyway from Geneva!!

Finally, please be careful in and around the station. Unfortunately there are a lot of pickpockets and baggage thieves. Be alert and watch your things!

Dear Hambagahle, thank you so much for your valuable post. Most of your posts are wonderful and worth reading. i am a fan of you now.

I saw the website for gandhi, and seems nice. Could you guide me how to reach that hotel once we arrive at Geneva Cornavin station?.

Is it possible to keep our luggage in locker for an hour or so?. if so, how to reach the locker? and approximate cost for locker service?

thanks in advance

heavens! I am delighted to have a fan!! Thank you!

Gandhi is about a 5 min walk from the station. here is a link to the map on their site. Suggest you click on the hypertext link to Google maps and you will see how close it is!:

http://www.gandhi.ch/acces

The lockers at the station are for a fixed fee for 24hrs. I don't think there are any short term ones. A reasonably large one (a big suitcase and a little one) would cost about 8-10frs. OR you can leave the bags at the Luggage Office for a flat fee which I think is 10frs/bag.

You find the locker and lugges office by looking up to the blue and white signs above your head! A pictogram with a suitcase on it means "Luggage" so follow that...

We just back from switzerland last week. It was a pleasure trip. We enjoyed alot.. scenic beauty everywhere.. clean, natural, beautiful people.. overall it was awesome.

People were really helpful ..

The first day i tried Gandhi restaurant.. its not really good.. We ordered rice and salmon fish curry. To be honest we didnot like the taste..

The next days we found some Arabic restaurants near the lake side (Montreux).. that was fine and charge were reasonable.

Thank you all for your wonderful advices and tips.. we enjoyed alottttttttttt..

Some facts

------------

1. Sun sat at around 9 PM

2. Shops are closing at 6 PM

3. Its hard to change 1000 Franks from any shop (We stuck for the first day)

4. Trains run @ sharp times (big surprise for me)

5. Bus run till 8 PM only

6. You can cross the road anywhere - all cars will stop for you

Hi Naaz853,

I'm glad you had such a great time in Montreux!

Just for folks who may be reading this in the future, I have to say that the town busses run far past 8 pm. In fact, the busses run until midnight, though admittedly not that often. For example, this is the scheudle for 20.00 - 23.00

20.09, 20.29, 20.49,

21.09, 21.29, 21.49,

22.09, 22.29, 22.49

I hope others won't run into the same problems as you did with the town busses!

Hi Naaz

Sorry about Gandhi!! That is too bad and not my experience but then I have not eaten there for a while! Will strike it off my list!!

I think the restaurant you found in Montreux might be my favourite one there - the Palais Oriental?? Right on the lakefront promenade, and serves Middle Eastern, Iranian and Indian dishes and is really quite gorgeous from the décor point of view.

I hope others reading your report do not follow your advice on crossing the road!! You are supposed to use the pedestrian crossings whenever they are within 100m (tehre is a fine if you don't but I have never seen this enforced) and cars have no obligation to stop for pedestrians otherwise (unless of course you are in a zone when pedestrians have priority). Generally cars do not make a habit of knocking people down (!!) but you never know...

Come back again soon. Next time for a superb Indian meal (expensive though) try Rasoi in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Geneva. It is top notch!!
