Trip planning needed urgently

Hi TA

We have planned to visit Zurich and Zermatt in 2nd half of May 2014, flying in from Gatwick, London.

We are seeking your advise of our itinenary as follows:-

Day 1 : Arrival at around 10am, Zurich - head to hotel for 2 nights

should we explore Bahnhofstrasse or a quick trip to Rhine Fall.

Day 2: Head down to Lucerne. Heard that Mt. Rigi is very scenic.

Day 3: Head down to Zermatt for 3 nights. We have booked Apt Haus Roc as all hotels and

hostels and B&B are fully booked during that period. Explore around the town for the rest

of the day.

Is 3 nights in Zermatt too much?

Day 4: Sunnegga and Findeln, Gornergrat and Riffelberg

Day 5: Day trip to Sierra?

Day 6: Head down to Florence from Zermatt

All suggestions and advises are appreciated.

Thank you

Priscilla

I find your plan, at least the Zermatt part, bewildering. It is hard to believe that any of the accommodations is fully booked in May, although many are closed any many residents leave the Village for vacation. Riffelberg is a stop on the train with a self service restaurant and access to the ski area and sledding. Not great in May. A day trip to Sierre? Why?

Finally, May and November are the two worst months to visit Zermatt. Enough said!

If you are arriving at Zürich by air go to the Rhine Falls before going into town to your hotel. Check your bags at the airport station and take a train to Winterthur and connect there for Schloss laufen. Then come back to the airport, get bags and go into town. The Rhine Falls and Zürich City are on opposite sides of the airport - one north, one south.

I would, in fact, go straight to Luzern and skip staying in Zürich which is predominently a business town. Luzern is much nicer for tourists. And yes, Rigi is lovely.

Zermatt in May is less than ideal - but then so are all the other mountain resorts! And the reason the hotels are showing "no availability" - rather than full - is that most of them, as gotlegal says, are closed. So are most restaurants. You should be able to find a hotel that is open though... they do not all close. Use the Zermatt Tourist Office website's search engine. Put in your dates and available hotels will come up.

I think you will find that the restaurants at Findeln and the self service at Riffelberg are closed in May.

Sierre? If you are going anywhere, it should be Sion not Sierre. Far more to see that is worthwhile in Sion and I would not make a day trip out from Zermatt. Instead leave Zermatt and stay in Sion or wherever that night...

You can get an international express train from Sion to Milano Centrale. Look at www.sbb.ch/en for times. You will need seat reservations. (These trains do not stop in Sierre or Visp, BTW). From Milano Centrale it is 1hr45 to Florence.

We stayed in Zermatt for 3nights in Mid Oct 2013, and wished we could have stayed longer, as our last day received the first snow. But in summer it could be different.

One day we went to Gornergrat, looked around and had lunch in the restaurant/cafe up on the peak. Very good. The other full day we went up to the Matterhorn Glacier, and did the look inside the ice cave and walked on the glacier.

As previously mentioned use the Swiss Rail site and also the Zermatt Travel at www.zermatt.ch/en/ which has summer activities listed as well. They are also happy to answer email questions, as they did for me and promptly too.

Zermatt is just a good little town, and its worth just a slow walk around.

Enjoy...
