Was wondering what the cost of the cable car up to the Matterhorn was, per person?
If you want to get to the foot of the Matterhorn then take the cable cars from Winkelmattern to Schwarzsee and walk up following signs for the "Hörnlihutte" which is the Matterhorn hut. Part of this walk has steep drop offs but it is not difficult. Unless you are a climber, that is as far as you can go... But if you take the cable car to the Klein Matterhorn you will have a great view of the "real thing". However I personally prefer the views from the Gornergrat, which one reaches by train.
Can only speak to the views from Glacier Paradise - absolutely incredible! From Glacier Paradise, you can also visit the Glacier Palace, which was really fun. Be aware that from any point you may actually not get to see the Matterhorn at all. We had beautiful sunny views, but by the time we went back to the base, the entire summit was in the clouds - not visible at all.
The reason I love the Gornergrat is (a) the views of the Matterhorn are great but (b) so are the views of many of the 4000m+ mountains that encircle Zermatt. AND - since I am more than interested in geology - you can actually see the European and African tectonic plates. The Matterhorn (red rocks) is on the African, and the highest mountain in our country, the Dufour spitze of the Monte Rosa, is on the European (black rocks). Fascinating.
Also the food is better at the Kulm Hotel on the Gornergrat than at the "Glacier Paradise" which is really a marketing gimmick for the cable cars...
As to views on the Matterhorn and other mountains. Any clouds can obscure them. Which is why we all say - spend at least two nights and hopefully more in Zermatt to be sure you see the views.
