Zermatt or Chamonix

My wife and I are planning a trip to Switzerland and France in early May. Neither of us ski, but we enjoy seeing the alpine vistas and doing some hiking. For 1 day (2 nights) should we visit Zermatt or Chamonix? Is this a bad time of year?

Hi and welcome to TA! May is not the best time for the Alps regardless of where as it is what we here in Alaska call "break up" meaning lots of wet ground, mud and, at higher elevations, still some snow. Depending on how the Spring goes, early May might be ski season still at least in Zermatt.

Chamonix is more like a town than a village while Zermatt is definitely a village. Even with melting, you can easily enjoy some jaw dropping vistas by taking the Gornergrat Railway up to the top and, even more awe-inspiring, taking the cable car up to the Klein Matterhorn (Little Matterhorn) where there is an observation deck. On a clear day the view up there is just magnificent as you are higher than many of the mountains spread out in front on you so it gives you a feeling of being on top of the world. Then, of course, there's the Matterhorn over looking the village.

Of the two, I would (and do) choose Zermatt but it does also somwhat depend on your itinerary before and after this stop.

You can get more information on Zermatt in English on the village's tourist information website

Hope this helps.
