There are three routes -

One - Take the autostrada Venezia-Milano and get off shortly before the Milan toll barrier and drive to Lecco and from there along the shores of lake Como to Chiavenna. Enter Switzerland and go up the Maloja pass and into the Engadine.

This is where I would spend a couple of days - in one of the small villages near St Moritz. Really stunning scenery and lovely little villages. Sils Maria and Baseglia, Silvaplana and Champfèr.

Then drive on over the Julier pass and on the autoroute around Zürich to Luzern or continue on via Bern to Interlaken if you are driving in winter. If in summer or early autumn take the road after the Julier towards Sedrun, which is in the Sursilva valley. This will lead you on to the Oberalp pass where the scenery is dramaticly rugged. Then drop down to Andermatt, continue on to Goschinen and join the A2 autoroute to Luzern. If to Interlaken and you want a really scenic route - continue from Andermatt over the Furka pass or put the car on the train at Realp, then down the Vallés de Conches, past Brig and Visp to Gampel where you go up to Goppenstein, put the car on the train, emerge at Kandersteg and drive down from there to Interlaken. This entire trip will take you around 7 hours as opposed to about 6 via Zürich. You can also take the A2 as described above and turn towards Sarnen if you are going to Interlaken.

A second route is to continue around Milan and turn north towards Chiasso. Make your stop over in Lugano. Then simply take the A2 north if you are bound for Luzern. If going to Interlaken turn off towards Sarnen and take the Brünig pass down to brienz, around the lake of Brienz and so to Interlaken.

The third route is more out of the way - Take the autostrade as desribed, continue around Milan and take the road towards Torino. Turn up towards the Simplon pass - Sempione in Italian. Go over the Simplon, down to Brig, then go through Visp and take the car train from Goppenstein to Kandersteg and to Interlaken that way. For Luzern continue on to Brienz, take the Brünig pass over to Sarnen and join the autoroute which will take you to Luzern. On this routing you could make a slight detour, drive up to Täsch from Visp and spend your couple of nights in Zermatt. (You have to take a train to Zermatt from Täsch as cars are not allowed up there...takes 12mins and there is ample parking at the station).

I hope you aren't planning to hire the car in Italy and drop it in Switzerland - drop fees are huge and can easily reach $1000 (US)!

Thank you for your advice- we wanted to drop the car in Switzerland-didn't realise that it would be that expensive! what would you recommend that we do?

To be specific:-

To go via the Engadine, take the train to Brescia and train to Tirano then Bernina Express to St Moritz and on.

To go via Lugano, train to Lugano, then train to Arth Goldau and train to Luzern. If going to Interlaken, then train to Locarno, Centovalli line to Domodossola, then train to Brig. From Brig to Spiez and Spiez to Interlaken.

To go via the Simplon line - train to Milano, then train to Brig and so on...
