Zurich Bellinzona Lake Como(Varenna) CinqueTerra Civitavecch

Sounds crazy, but leaving from Civitavecchia on cruise. Have never been to Zurich will stay there then travel on SGV boat to Lake Lucerne, Lagano,Bellanzona,Lake Como, CinqueTerra and finally Civitavecchia. Have tvl Italy many times, but never in the north. HELP...any suggestions, Eurorail web site not too good with time tables for these journeys. Will call them. Any help with local guides in any of these cities, tours, hotels etc. Thank you travel late Nov. 2012.

You travel from Zurich to Lucerne by train. The SGV boats run only on Lake Lucerne. From Lucerne you take the train to Bellinzona, Lugano and Como. Use the SBB website for travel within Switzerland and Trenitalia for Italy.

Tours from Bellinzona train station to the 3 castles? Any suggestions, we will be there end of Nov. want to get off train, check luggage and tour, then board night train. Any suggestions, how to tour 1 or all of the castles and the town?

You do any tours of the castles on your own. Walk from the station to the castles, pay your entrance fee and look around. Same for the town. Bellinzona is not a very big place!

There are NO night trains from Switzerland to Italy. We used to have them a long time ago, but now the day trains are so fast that there is no need for a night train.

Plan to get to Milan at the end of the day. Spend the night there. Take a "Frecchiarossa* train from Milano Centrale to Roma Termini. Will take about 3 hours. Change at Termini for Civitavecchia. That takes 40 mins or so. Then taxi to your ship.

there is a coastal rail line and you should be able to get a train la Spezia to Pisa and then south to Civitavecchia. From Pisa it takes about 2.5 hours and no need to go to Roma.

Do not buy a train pass for travel in Italy: it will cost more than buying ordinary tickets from Trenitalia.

And don't use Eurorail (or any other agency) to get information on trains. These sites seldom have information on the cheaper, slower, local trains. Go to the actual train operators, as linked in reply #1.
