By car calculate 2:30 to 3 hours, but be aware that around Milano you will encounter rather hectic traffic and most of the itinerary is rather heavy traffic with trucks, once you are down from the mountains. This would be for the direct route trough Chiavenna and Como.

By public transport, there are different options, but not very frequent connections. But they are all very scenic. It however depends what time of year you are traveling. There are more connections during season (Winter mid-December to mid-April, Summer End June-Mid October).

The most direct connection is train/bus through Bellinzona (Ticino) and it takes 5:33,. Tthere is one only train with just one change (St. Moritz is on small gauge only) in Tirano and takes 6:45. This is the famous panoramic Bernina Express from St. Moritz to Tirano, along glaciers and mountain valleys, most recommended if you have time. Then there is a combination with the bus from St. Moritz to Chiavenna, a nice ride downhill to a lovely small city, where you change to the train for Milano. This one takes 6:27. It's nicer in Summer, as the valley has not much sun and life in Winter.

For itineraries see www.sbb.ch, the official train site, also in English.

Enjoy your traveling
