Pontresina and the Roseg Glacier

We aregoing on a Globus tour in July. We will be staying at the Monopol Hotel Via Maistra 17 in St. Moritz. One of the optional tours that Globus offers is after a short drive to Pontresina, you enter the roseg Valley . Your horse drawn carriage takes about 1 hour to ascend to the restaurant at 6,562 feet with a spectacular view of the glacier. The cost is $39 per person or 31 €. My question is this? What do you think of this tour? Is it possible at all to do this on our own or do we have to do this through Globus? Globus offers a lot of optional tours and we are trying to save some money by deciding which ones to take and which ones to try on our own. Thank you

The Roseg valley is undoubtly one of the most impressing scenery. You can walk (in 1 3/4 hours, out ca. 1 1/4), 7 km slightly uphill resp. downhill back. For the horse carriage (1 hour in, 45 min out) you have two options:

1) you take your own carriage for 1-4 persons one way CHF 100.00, return (with one hour stay, additional hour CHF 50.00) CHF 150.00. For more than 5 persons sharing, you pay CHF 22.00 one way, CHF 32.00 return. You decide the departure time.

2) there is a sceduled horse drawn omnibus, charging CHF 16.00 one way, 26.00 return per person. You have to book ahead (phone +41(=)81 842 60 57 or e-mail to: fuhrhalt.costa@bluewin.ch. In July, the timetable is the following:

Departures Pontresina: 09.00, 10.15, 11.00, 11.45, 14.15, 16.00

you spend as long as you like in the Roseg. There is a well recommended hotel (www.roseg-gletscher.ch) with a restaurant with table service or self service and a nice terrace with a famous dessert buffet

Departures from Roseg: 11.00, 13.15, 14.00, 15.00, 17.00, 18.00

From St. Moritz to Pontresina and back you go by train for CHF 4.60 one way, 9.20 return, in 2nd class. For timetable and additional information see www.sbb.ch, also in English.

From the hotel Monopol you either walk to the train station (10- 15 min.) , you have the hotel car bring you there, or there is a local bus just outside the hotel on the school place which leaves every 15 minutes and takes 3 minutes. Ask reception for directions for the right bus, as all the buses leave there.

Check www.stmoritz.ch for details about St. Moritz and www.pontresina.com for Pontresina and the Roseg Valley (both in English as well). On the Pontresina site unter "Pontresina" and then "Transporte" you find all the information about the horse carriages, but the download is only in German.

There are of course other options and daytrips, e.g. with the train to Morteratsch (see www.sbb.ch). There is an alp with a show cheesery where you can have brunch with cheese. From there you take a walk into the Morteratsch valley where you reach the glacier in ca. 1 hour with information on the way (no transport into the valley, so you would have to walk out again. There is a nice hotel at the train station as well (www.morteratsch.ch)

Or you just step out of your hotel, cross the square and take the cable car to Corviglia or up to Piz Nair on 3057 m.a.S. with a spectacular panorama (restaurant on the top)

The change for the CHF (Swiss Franc) is app. 1.26 to the USD, 1.52 to the EUR
