The train looks like it's taking avg 10 hours... trying to find alternative routes

If you want to travel through quite high mountains across the direction of main valleys, the travel is going to be slow. Unless you travel by air (which is not in the range of prce fit for an average wallet) you will have no other choice. Driving may be somewhat faster but, again, has it's drawbacks

There is a bus from Chiavenna to St.Moritz, it's much faster than taking the train over the Bernina.
