Bernina Express

Staying in Milan and Lake como and wish to go on Bernina Express.

Would it be best to do this from either of these places.

Is it easy to do independent or best to go as an organised trip.

Also is it necessary to have a hire car as we would like to visit Bellagio from Lake Como and more sightseeing when at the Lake.

Finally can anyone recommend how best to book the train.

Check the online timetable on www.sbb.ch for your exact dates and with the exact location on Lake Como where you will stay and decide upon this.

Sure you can do this independently, dont bother to book a group tour for this. You even dont have to take the so-called express, just any train on the line from Tirano to St. Moritz and back has the same spectacular view and there are hourly departures.

I dont know where you think you may need a car for the Bernina Express. The views from the train line are more scenic than the road and driving on a mountain pass road you would not have time to enjoy the view anyway.

To book the train, you can do so on the sbb site I gave you. Only the "express" would need a compulsory reservation (fee), other trains just hop on and off. With the normal trains, you perhaps could include a visit to Diavolezza www.diavolezza.ch for the high mountain experience. Have e.g. lunch on the sunny panorama terrasse.

Was thinking of car hire to get from Milan airport to Milan for a couple of nights and then on to Lake Como.

Is a car necessary to get around these places and other tourist attractions or is it viable and cheaper for 4 adults to use public transport in the month of July

You cannot catch the Bernina Expressfrom Milan or from Lake Como. It travels from Tirano vianSt Moritz to Chur.

And Swiss railways also has a shuttle bus, taking about 2 hours, between Lugano station and Tirano and timed to match Bernina Express arrivals/departures; Lugano is close to Como lake as you'll know. Whether this bus (reservations recommended) is in the end better than Italian trains from Como to Tirano is not easy to say, will depend on your exact Como location.

All the best,
