Hi evelynpennyco...

It will help if you could advise more details of your holiday - no.of days, places you would like to visit ( mountains or cities and whether you would like to stay in a city or some scenic village / town ).

There is the famed Glacier Express which runs from Zermatt to St.Moritz and it is an 8-hour journey. You could stay at Zermatt or SM or even some other base nearby to undertake this train trip.

Your further inputs will help to give you specific ideas.

International airports for Switzerland are usually Zurich and Geneva. Within Europe one may add Basel (Mulhouse in France), Bern and Lugano. Other smaller airstrips take on private jets and air taxi. I don´t think you have these in mind, if you need to ask. The terminals of Glacier Express are Chur (also St Moritz after adding part of Bernina Express route) and Zermatt, effectively a day apart. Walking around St Moritz and Zermatt is like walking up to Edinburgh from Linlithgow everyday. So let granddad decide if these are good bases. The other problem will be for the youngest who may not have the patience sitting in a moving box for a 7 hours stretch. Chur is not hilly comparatively.

Time to spend at each end and anywhere in between depends on total time you will have. What are the interests of the group? Any interests on Ticino the Italian corner? on the beach by the lake?

thanks for your input, thats all very useful! We are thinking of the possibility of edinburgh to newcastle by train, then boat to amsterdam then sleeper from amsterdam to zurich and train to somewhere to pick up the glasier express to zermatt and on the geneva for a flight home to edinburgh. An adventure!, we have 2 weeks, maybe basing ourselves somewhere for a week near st morittz/chur and then a few days maybe geneva???

the oldest is 81and the fittest and the youngest are both 10.

thanks again

No, the terminals are St.Moritz and Zermatt. The Bernina Express is from St. Mortiz to Tirano.

From Zürich you have three options to catch the Glacier express.

- Take the train to St.Moritz and stay a night or more there.

- Take the train to Chur and board the Glacier express there directly. No need to stay a night. You will miss the Albula section of the Glacier express, which is UNESCO world heritage.

- Take the train tho Andermatt board the Glacier express there. You would miss the Albula, the Ruinaulta and the Oberalppass sections.

I would take the first option if you have the time. I can give you some tips what to do in St.Moritz and Zermatt once you know your schedule.

I wanted to make the same precisions re Glacier and Bernina Express earthJoker did, je/she just bet me to it.

You dont tell how much time you have for your trip and what your main interests are and how flexible you are. July is school holidays in Switzerland, so take this into account.

As for Engadin St. Moritz, there is a special with complimentary passes for mountain cablecars and some even for the whole public transport with a stay of two or more nights, see …stmoritz.ch/sommer/en/bergbahnen-inclusive/ - make sure you choose a hotel participating in this special. There are even holiday rentals offering the special.

see what the area would have to offer: http://www.engadin.stmoritz.ch/sommer/de/ and have a look at the films an slides show here: www.engadin.stmoritz.ch/sommer/en/multimedia/

There are activities for every age in the area. Have also a look at family specials and activities with children.
