Coming with 20 month toddler in July..plz advise

We are planning a 4 day trip to Switzerland from London (hubby will be there for work) and can only take off 4 days and 5th day we fly back to states. After reading many posts it seems that wengen is a winner..what airport should we fly in? And should we stay in lucerne or wengen. We have the baby so we would want to do easy hikes. Is this the region we should stick to or somewhere else?

Hi, Wengen would be a good choice and I would fly into Zurich - regular flights from either Heathrow or London City. I would stay in Wengen. There is a train station in the airport at Zurich so the transfer is easy. You can get all the train timetables in English on the Swiss Rail website

www.sbb.ch/en

It will take about three hours from the airport to Wengen and there will be 3 or 4 changes depending on which train you take. Swiss trains are very comfortable and clean.

You might want to do some reading on the Swiss tourism office's website

www.myswitzerland.com

Hope this helps.

Wengen is particularly nice (though a bi old fashioned!) because it is car-free. But be careful about how high you take your baby. Children under two yhould not go above 2000m because the air is thinner as you go up so correspondingly you get less oxygen. The Jungfraujoch and the Schilthorn are therefore not advisable. Wengen itself is low - 1200m - so no need to worry there.

In 4 days you simply cannot get to st Moritz (extreme east) AND Geneva (extreme west). However you could skip Wengen and fly into and out of Zurich and go to St Moritz OR keep Wengen in the plan and fly into and out of Geneva, taking time on the way back to visit the town.

The only airport hearer to Wengen than ZRH or GVA is the small Bern-Belp airport. However they do not have flights to and from London - you would have to go to Southampton - so you would waste more time than you save. Also I believe the timetable is not even daily... So it is ZRH or GVA.

Trains: 1. Wengen -Take any train Zurich airport OR Geneva airport to Bern. Change there for Interlaken Ost and again for Lauterbrunnen. change there for the short (12min) ride up to Wengen.

2. St Moritz - Fly into ZRH. Take any train to Chur. Change there for a train to St Moritz.

Total train time in both cases is about 3 hrs.

Thank you so much for your help. One more question. With a toddler what region would be more advisable? St. Moritz or Wengen? We love the mountains and would like to be able to use our 4 days to the fullest to soak in Swiss charm and beauty. Thanks - also which hotel would you recommend for both?

Paradoxically, while Wengen is lower than St Moritz, the mountains around Wengen are higher than those in the Engadine....

But I love the car free villages... and St Moritz is not a village. it is a town in the mountains. However there are lots of smaller places around it.

Heads you win, tails I loose - about sums it up. Both areas have lots to offer...
