I lived in Switzerland for a year and a half as a child. I remember taking the train a lot. I thought this was because it was economical. But now my husband and I are going for a vacation, and I'm staggered at the costs of train tickets. It's over 200 dollars to go round trip from the Zurich Airport to Interlaken. It'd be $800 for a Swiss rail pass for both of us for 4 days. Don't get me started on he Jungfraujoch.
But I can find rental cars for 22 dollars a day on travelocity. We'll be there for a total of 5 days, including travel days, and we'll spend the whole time exploring the interlaken area. I realize there are towns we want to see, like Murren, where we can't drive, and will have to take a train.
Am I missing something else? What are the other costs if we go with the car? Is fuel and parking enough to make up the difference? Can we get to the Reichenbach falls and the Trummelbach falls by car? Anywhere else important that we can't get to by car?
Thanks so much to anyone who can offer suggestions.
