Interlaken or not?

We are considering Interlaken for a week's holiday next summer. We have a 7 year old daughter. Would there be enough to do around Interlaken for a week. A few posts on this forum have said to avoid Interlaken. Is is not a nice place? How easy is it to get around without a car? Are the trains easy?

THanks

The area is fantastic. Its the town of Interlaken itself that is to be avoided.

We visited last summer with our three children. We had three days and it wasn't near long enough. We stayed in Murren, a car free village in the mountains. It was beautiful. You could choose to stay in Murren, Wengen (another car free village), Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald. All would be good choices, depending on what you plan to do while there. If you wish to visit Ballenburg (sp?) Museum in Brienz and maybe take a boat tour on Lake Brienz to get there, you need to go to Interlaken; however, its easily accessible by cable car and train from any of these other locations.

Thanks. But why should Interlaken be avoided. What is wrong with it?!

I wouldn't say it should be avoided, it's just a large town and doesn't have the character of the villages surrounding it. In the summer it is busy and full of tourists. It sits on flat land between the 2 lakes.

Most people go the this area to be in the mountains and so stay in the mountain area to the south. However if you are out of season Interlaken will most probably be ok. Or try Wilderswil just outside, a bit quieter. It depends what you want.

Having a car is a hindrance, parking is a problem and some of the villages are car free. It's great fun using the trains, cable car, boats etc. no need for a car. I'm sure you children will love it.

Interlaken is a gateway town to some truly beautiful places. but it has no beauty of its own. In fact it's a fairly dismal place. Suggest go through Interlaken and on to one of the much nicer places nearby. You have a choice of lakeside or mountain villages.

We stayed at Lauterbrunnen, deep in a mountain valley, and thought it was just an amazingly beautiful spot. Others here recommend Grindelwald, in another nearby valley, or Murren and Wengen, both car free villages up in the mountains. Plenty of things in the area to keep you occupied.

So, stay close to Interlaken, but not in it. And the train system is excellent. Absolutely no need for a car whatsoever.

A lot of folks stay in interlaken, because there are lots of large hotels suitable for tour groups and kids staying at Balmers. But nothing to see but tourist shops and mountains are where you want to be. Just to let you know in the summer the town host a huge concert, kids from all over Europe descend on the town camp out, drink beer, etc avoid at all costs unless that's what you are going for.
