Grindelwald in November

We have 4 days to spend in Switzerland and had thought about going to Grindelwald on 24 November. It appears many hotels may be closed during this time. Can anyone advise if -

1. it is worth visiting Grindelwald in November?

2. is it worth staying for a night in Grindelwald? we had thought this would be nicer than staying in Interlaken.

3. how much is open/closed ie. restaurants and shops?

Greatly appreciate any assistance

November is when a town like Grindelwald takes a breather after the summer and before the ski season.

Grindelwald is worth a visit at anytime I think you will always find somewhere open to get something to eat and drink and there a couple of supermarkets open which serve the local populace.

depends upon how many people in your family and their interests. grindelwald without doubt is haven for people who like to be in the snow and love the cold. interkalen this time of the yr will be slow, laid back and 50% closed.

since grindelwald and ilaken are so close bye..... it would be worth visiting and deciding at either of the places as to where you would like to stay. (30 mins travel time)

i am sure you would like both places. i have stayed at the belvadere at grindelwald... expensive and fancy... but lovely. and at metropole.... modern and chich in interlaken, and at the river house at hotel bellevue in intwerlaten... awesome place to stay with your extended family. in interlaken. all of these were realllllly good..... visit both towns and decide where you want to stay.. you will find plenty of places since it will be low season.

Grindelwald is a ski resort. And most ski resorts (all ski resorts?) are not really open for business out of the ski and the summer seasons. that said, Grindelwald is a reasonably large place and there are locals who need facilities such as bars, restaurants, the sports centre etc. If you don't mind the place not "humming" when you are there, by all means go in mid November.

Interlaken on the other hand is not a resort. It is a town that happens to have some reasonable hotels and two railways stations. (It is also not on a lake...) Interlaken will be open for business, so to speak, in November as it is throughout the year. So if you want lots of choice in terms of hotels, food etc, stay in Interlaken and make day trips to the mountains.

Grindelwald was beautiful in October, it was already quiet, but it is for sure just as nice in November. The question is : What will the weather be like.

Good weather = great stay also for several days, I imagine

Bad weather = not worth staying more than a day.

But it is low season and you can for sure book a hotel, telling them that you will stay a shorter or longer period, depending on the weather

With respect, Beamypc, how much do you kow about ski resorts? The fact is that most hotels in Grindelwald and the otehr resorts will be closed this month and until mid-December. And we usually have cold and wet weather in November -- which in fact is what we have now. Snow is forecast this week down to 500m, with even some snow showers on the plain. Last week we had two nice days. We aren't expecting any for the coming week or 10 days.

I, too, was in Grindelwald in october. And the weather was glorious. But October is not November...

I was lucky to find a good day to visit Grindelwald and go up to Jungfrau a few days ago. On a sunny day, Grindelwald, even when not during snow season, is a beautiful town with enough facilities worth a day or two, especially if you go to Jungfrau, Lauterbrunnen and Wengen, etc. On a bad weather day, it would be miserable just like most other places.

We actually watched a hockey game Saturday night in the center of town after a dinner at Interlaken. Admission was free and it was fun.
