Grindelwald with kids in July

We are travelling to Grindelwald in July 2016 with our 2 sons aged 7 & 9 (they are good travellers). We are hiring a car from Zurich and driving to Grindelwald on Tuesday morning, have all day Wednesday and all day Thursday in Grindelwald and then drive back to Zurich on Friday morning to catch a train to Bavaria.

We have a few questions which we would appreciate comments on please:

1. What are the "must sees" on the road trip between Zurich and Grindelwald?

2. We want to go to Jungfraujoch. It looks as though the train goes through Grindelwald - is it possible to get discounted tickets for kids? What about the kids train passes if we are already hiring a car? Would it be a whole day trip up to Jungfraujoch from Grindelwald?

3. What other side trips are recommended from Grindelwald in the time we have available? We don't want to do any hikes, but would be keen to see other local attractions / the kids have never seen snow before so just general mountain scenery would be good.

4. Would you recommend going to the James Bond display at Schilthorn from Grindelwald? Given we had a rental car, would we drive or take the train there?

Thanks so much

First I recommend that you not hire/rent a car and instead rely on the train system. Your car will most likely not be touched once you get to Grindelwald.

If you plan to travel to Jungraujoch (which you should, if the weather is good) you and your spouse having a Half Fare Card will come in handy. The roundtrip train from Grindelwald for you and your spouse is CHF184 each with no discount. If you or your spouse don't have a HFC, then the fare for your sons would be CHF92 each. With the HFC, you can get a free Family Card. That means your sons would travel free throughout Switzerland. And then your and your spouse's fare to Jungfraujoch would be CHF92 each, roundtrip. Without a HFC, your family's roundtrip to Jungfraujoch alone would be CHF552. AND you'd be paying for a rental car.

With a HFC your family's roundtrip to Jungfraujoch would be CHF184. With the HFC you would pay a total of CHF584 for: two HFCs (CHF120 x 2), two adult roundtrip to/from Grindelwald/Zürich (CHF80 x 2), and two adult roundtrip to/from Jungfraujoch/Grindelwald (CHF92 x 2). Plus you'll have the HFC so any other train/cable car travel you do while in the Grindelwald area will be 50% off.

Schilthorn (50% off with a HFC) offers amazing views as well and you take a cable car up from Stechelberg or Mürren so it is a bit of a different experience than the train to Jungfraujoch. Mürren is a quaint little village with amazing views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks.

Since you'll be in Grindelwald, your family may be interested to visit the Gletscherschlucht (Glacier Gorge).

There are many waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen valley including Trümmelbachfälle.

I have been to Schilthorn twice in the last 3 years, and I am not aware of any "James Bond display", other than a life-size cardboard statue of James Bond for photo opportunities. Maybe I missed something.

Yes, the trip to Schilthorn is worth it, but you cannot drive to the top. From Grindelwald, you would need to either drive to Lauterbrunnen and then takes the cable car to Grutschalp, then a train to Murren, and then a series of cable cars to Schilthorn.

You could also drive to Stechelberg, and take the series of cable cars to the top.

#2, there is an 007 exhibition near the restaurant.

OP, I wouldn't hire a car as it will be more of a hinderence while in Grindelwald. It will eithe sit in a car park al the time or you'll use it and deprive your 2 boys the joy of travelling on trains, cable cars and gondolas. And miss out all the wonderful places these go to and art not accessible by car.

Ditch the car and take the train. A train ticket is valid all day and you can hop on and off a train if you want to take a break. Better still buy a pass and this gives you freedom.

Enjoy.

Thanks for those comments - very helpful!

Should we wait until we are in Grindelwald before making the booking for Jungfraujoch (to make sure the weather is ok)? Is it likely to be booked out in July?

Absolutely, wait until the morning to check the weather. No point in going if it's wet or cloudy.

It has been reported that very occasionally it does sell out in high summer but as you have a head start from Grindelwald you should have no problems. Go in the morning as cloud often rolls in during the afternoon.
