Need advice - best base for Berner Oberland?

Hi All,

Different strokes for different folks as I am discovering from your feedback. Preferences seem to include Brienz, Grindelwald, Murren, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen. One woman raved about the Brienz and it's lake as a dreamy base. So - what would you recommend for first timers? Really don't want anything too noisy and touristy yet want to stike a good balance between not feeling too isolated. Our total travel time in Switzerland is 9 days and really don't want to rush things.

Cheers,

I would recommend the small town of SPIEZ, on a bay of Lake of Thun as a base.

To find accomodation there:

www.spiez.ch, then -Tourismus-Unterkunft-Ferienwohnungen-Ferienwohnungen in Spiez.

If you stay in Spiez you have direct train connections to a lot of interesting regions of Switzerland such as:

1. Interlaken-Brienz-Lucerne

2.Interlaken-Grindelwald/Wengen-Jungfraujoch

3.Kandersteg-Brig (Wallis/Valais) and from there to Zermatt or to Sierre and Crans-Montana i.e.

4. Thun-Berne-Fribourg-Lausanne

5. Zweisimmen (Panoramic Train)-Gstaad-Montreux.

And in between, you can relax in Spiez on the lake. i'm sure you'll like it. Enjoy!

Thank you for your advice, Linnen. I will do further research on Spiez as a possibility for a base. It was mentioned somewhere along the internet maze as being a lovely spot. Boy, so many choices. Can't wait for this Swiss experience!!!

Consider where you stay in Spiez,Funnybone. The railway station is a long walk uphill from the lakeside. If you have elderly relatives with you, they may not enjoy the steep climb, although it is a lovely site. Not sure about frequency of bus service which runs to station from pier.

Best wishes.
