Alpine Meadows for the older traveller

My Mother who is 80 wants to go to Switzerland to see in her words 'alpine flowers and go on trains'. Any suggestions for a gentle trip that would include both of theses attractions?

Hi, does your Mom have respiratory problems? If so, you will want to concentrate on the lower elevation places where she can enjoy the mountains soaring above but avoid the thinner air at high elevations. Also is she traveling on her own or with others? When would she like to make this trip?

Going on the trains is easy - the Swiss Rail system - in fact, the entire public transportation system - is incredible! We can give you specifics about that when there is more information about where would make the best trips. Also there are rail journeys such as the Glacier Express where she can ride through the higher Alpine meadows without having to stay at altitude if she might suffer.

If you could provide us with a little more information, we can help you to select some places to look at. Also, the Swiss Tourism English website is excellent

When do you think she would like to come here? Best time for the flower filled meadows is in mid to late June, depending on altitude. And "meadows of flowers" really don't happen over 2000m so there shouldn't be a problem for your mother... Flowers bloom earlier at a lower altitude. The cows go up to the high pastures in mid to lake June, and that is when the flowes are best to see.

I would suggest that she consider the Golden Pass train from Montreux, via Rougemont, Château d'Oex and Gstaad to Zweisimmen, with a connection to Spiez. If she did this trip around 20-30 June she would see all the pastures in bloom. (If they seem very yellow, then that is because they are blooming with dandelions!! But they are also flowers and when viewed from a distance, very pretty ones at that!!) No part of this route should be a problem in any way for an older person. And she could get off the train and explore a really pretty village, like Rougemont, quite easily.
