hotels in lucerne

will be visiting Lucerne for 2 nights (Sat & Sun) in late Sept. find that the hotels are very expensive in lucerne and that some do not provide air-conditioning. is it difficult to book a room during this period - should i start booking it now? have identified the following hotels:

Continental Park Hotel

Best Western Hotel Krone (no air-con)

Schiller Hotel

any comments about the three? can we survive without air-conditioning during this period? any other suggestions (budget from 200fr to 300fr). thanks for the help.

Lucerne Music Festival goes on till late September, that explains the high price of hotel room until then. By then weather will be cool to chilly at night/ morning. So unless you have a southwesterly window, it should be cool enough without air conditioning. BW Hotel Flora was putting up a/c late last year, so it should be operative by this summer. Their rooms are slightly smaller than those in Continental-Park, but should suffice. There are other choices, but let us know how much you need an hotel close to rail station, in old town, by the lake, or you won't mind 2-3 tram station (1 km)(e.g. Pension Villa Maria) or a short train ride away.

I would ask for a room on the lake side of a hotel, that way you can catch a breeze. Our hotel offered a fan and it was fine. But we were right on the water where the air could get to us.

thanks all for the advice. Bofoster, we will be in Lucerne on 27 & 28 Sept and would want the hotel to be within walking distance to the rail station, old town and the casino (friend like to try his luck). The hotel Flora get quite a mix review from this forum. am also considering the Hotel De La Paix (location alright, standard double room 222fr with breakfast) while continental's rate is 296fr. any suggestions for hotels in that range, thanks.

We stay in Hotel Des Balances. Hotel Des Alpes is right next door. A bit smaller, but had the same view and right by the bridges in old town, so a great spot, and in your price rannge.

Have fun!

Hi citiestraveller, Last summer asiarooms (? a Singaporean site) gave a 50% discount on Continental-Park Hotel. Why not see what they have for the coming summer? Park portion of C-P is an older building with slightly smaller rooms and wood floored corridor, that might be what asiarooms and other tour agents get for less than the official rate. One problem with rooms on this side is that on weekends in summer, there would be noisy activities in this small park.

In the same block, Waldstaetterhof is just as close to the rail station and cheaper, just no a/c. The noise people complained about refers to the early morning delivery if your room happens to be on top of that. Which is different to the late night noise in other hotels where the noise comes from the bar below.

Personally, I am thinking of staying in Thalwil this summer. This is midway between Lucerne and Zurich. The frequent trains should not present a problem even with an evening out in either place.

thanks for the advice. we're seriously considering the hotel des alps recommended by thehappytraveler44. we need to stay in lucerne since my friend likes to visit the casino after dinner. we noticed about an offer for 2 nights at Art Deco Montana at 298fr (standard room hillside view) including breakfast. not sure if the hotel is as good as commented in this forum, photos of rooms look much better than the virtual tour. also wonder if the mosquito problem stated by some tolerable.

btw thehappytraveler44, did you eat at the restaurant in hotel des balances? is the food and service good?

thanks again for all the info.

Hi CitiesTraveller,

I've also stayed at the Hotel Des Balances and ate there every night, so maybe I can add something to your question --

Yes, I ate there every night!! I tried and tried to force myself out to try other restaurants but kept returning to Des Balances. The food was soooooo good! And the menu was so varied!! Every night I wanted to order everying on the menu but of course couldn't, so had to return the next night to taste more dishes!

The restaurant was really filled every night too, and with young folks coming in from the streets of Luzern, not just tourists like me.

And finally, the staff could not have been nicer. Every night, they sat me, a single diner, at a table in front of the huge picture window by the river's edge! Some restaurants can over-look a single diner -- put the hapless sod in some forgotten corner and then give somewhat less than good service. But this staff treated me like royalty.

It's a really good restaurant!

Yes...as Swndav said, the hotel restaurant is fabulous. The bar is very nice, and they offer new guests a complimentary glass of prosceco as you sit and gaze out at the river and church beyond. The service in the restaurant was the best. The waitress took our picture with the Jesuit Church in the backround right before sunset, and it was our Christmas card this past year! I only wish that I could remember the name of the other restaurants that were also fabulous. One was across the bridge, turn right, walk about a block, turn left, and down about two blocks. You could inquire at the front desk in the hotel. They served fabulous seafood and steaks. The service there was also outstanding. Off the beaten path, with regulars, and no tourists. Except for us..;)

The Happy Traveler
