Geneva Hostel

I think of staying in Geneva hostel in november in shared room. Is it safe? Clean? Good location for going out during evening and public transportation during day?

Yes on all counts, considering of course a normal behaviour (i.e. Geneva remains a large city with the usual problems found in other cities). Only issue is to avoid the Red Light district (Rue de Berne and around) but you can do that simply by walking by the lake or taking the bus.

Mainly one hostel in Geneva:

http://genevahostel.ch

There are some alternatives though listed on geneve-tourisme.ch/en/…

http://www.cityhostel.ch/english/ might be one (almost the same location as the previous one

http://homestpierre.ch/ is well located but hard to get (booking-wise)

The others are mostly for extended stays.

I've stayed at both the Geneva Hostel and the City Hostel (in dormitories both times), and would happily use either again.

I think I (a solo female traveller) ended up walking through the red light district at least once at night but didn't even realise until I was home and saw other people referring to it as such, it definitely didn't feel unsafe or unpleasant.

The City Hostel has kitchens, which meant I didn't have to spend a lot of money eating out every day, but is very close to the railway so can be a bit noisy when the trains go past (I didn't have a problem, but a lighter sleeper might notice it).

The Geneva Hostel is in a slightly quieter place, and the price includes breakfast but had no kitchens, and the lockers came with locks (for the City Hostel lockers you need to provide your own padlock)

Thanks, EGwynne. Very useful! I've added this discussion in the top questions (under "Booking a room in Geneva")
