Travelling from Zurich with family. Please suggest best places to see in Geneva in one day
Planning to return to zurich same night.
Is 6 hours on a train in a day really worth this? If you think so, then here is a link to a walking/bus tour of Geneva. IF you have a Swiss Pass/Flexi Pass then all the Geneva trams and buses are included for you. With a HFC you can buy a day ticket on the train (cost varies depending on the time you take your first train) which will include the buses etc in Geneva. Otherwise if you are buying point to point tickets ask for a "City" ticket which will also include the buses etc in Geneva.
Second Hambagahle's opinion... This being said, the whole family might well collapse on the way back and sleep during the return trip :-). Two lines are connecting the two cities. Choose the one passing by Neuchatel since it is nicer (beware though, every second hour, this one requires a quick change in Bienne).
Totally agree with Swissdiver... the line at the foot of the Jura via Neuchâtel is much prettier than via Bern. But it takes maybe 10-15mins longer, so perhaps is best done on the return trip when you are not in a hurry to get to Geneva. Be careful about your ticket. You would then need one via Neuchâtel and the other via bern...
Actually the Neuchatel line is now faster than the Bern one, but only by few minutes (2 hours 38 minutes vs. 2 hours 43). Trains now go non stop between Yverdon and Geneva (so no more direct connection between Zurich and Nyon or Morges).
Ticket-wise, no differentiation. It is sold "via Bern OR Biel - Olten" (the later being the one passing by Neuchatel). So just buy return tickets and decide at the last minute which train you'd like to board. Return tickets are valid for 10 days. Be aware, you can no more buy them aboard the train (unless you are ready to pay a CHF 90 extra!).
P.S.: Check sbb.ch/en/…mobile-apps.html. "SBB Mobile" apps are free and quite useful!Edited: 4:51 am, May 03, 2013
