Housing ideas for group of 4

We are traveling with our two granddaughters ages 21 and 19 and would prefer to stay lodge in same room. Looking for reasonable housing in Switzerland and the Provence area of France.

For 1-2 nights you might look for hostels, they often have rooms for 4 people and are mostly directed to all ages, are clean and don't cost to much. You can find them on towns websites, youthostel.ch or as well international sites like hostels.com

Do they have private bathrooms for your party? Somewhere I read they cost about us much as hotels these days.

Is that where families stay when they travel.

Swiss families do not stay in hotels very often, because they are to expensive for families, plus Switzerland is so small you often return home at the evening.

We rather travel to other countries where accomodation is more affordable for families.

Or we stay in apartements, but most often they are only rented for a whole week. If you're traveling off season you might be able to get something only for a few days.

In youth hostels baths are often shared, somtimes there are rooms available with private bathrooms. You can see this in the online booking tool, but I think the text is only in German. If you're looking for a specific one, post again, then we will help you with translation.

I would decide where you want to go and then write to the tourist office of this town/region or post again here for a recommendation of specific accomodation.

4 adults in a hotel room is rare in France and Switzerland - in fact Europe as a whole. It's a cultural thing, but even more driven by the fact that we don't have spare space to make hotel rooms bigger than they need to be. As someone who has spent plenty of time trying to book for a family in both, you should think about:

- 2 budget hotel rooms (e.g. Ibis chain) is often the cheapest option (even if it doesn't look that way). Our children are younger and we need interconnecting room, which is frequently tricky. You won't have that issue - and will therefore have more choice.

- hotel suites. Frequently more expensive than 2 rooms, and associated with more upscale hotels.

- aparthotels. There are some, more in France than Switzerland. The best way to find them is through search engines by looking for a room for 4 adults in the area you are looking for (this will also throw up the few hotels with family rooms). In Geneva, for example, I stayed in a good one in Ferney-Voltaire (just the other side of the French border).

- apartment rental. Tends to be for longer periods and require deposits, agreed meeting times for handover, handback etc.

- hostels. Because they have dorm style rooms, can accomodate parties of 4.

You will find rates much higher than you are used to in Utah. But land is at a premium.

Agree with many things posted above. I'd like to add though the fact you can in Switzerland go to 1* or 2* hotels and get an very nice service. This is one of the beauties of this country. So two adjacent or communicating rooms might well be the best solutions in most of the cases for the Swiss part of your trip.
