You can certainly drive from Bern to Milan and there are several different routes you can take. But first - are you planning to rent a car in Switzerland and drive to Italy and drop it? If so - think again! Drop charges can easily go more than USD1000 and to that you of course add the daily rental cost, petrol (USD8/gallon or USD2/litre) and tolls - in Italy maybe about USD50 - and parking.

But if you drive here are your options:

1. Autoroute south of Bern to VEVEY. Join the A9 and drive to MARTIGNY. Follow signs to Grand St Bernard pass and take the tunnel (toll) into Italy. Drive down to Aosta, then past Ivrea to the Torino/MIlano autostrada. Then to Milan Total time roughly 4hrs.

2. Bern to Thun to Kandersteg. Put car on the train to Goppenstein. Drive down to Gampel, turn to Brig and from there over the SIMPLON pass. Down to Domodossola and on past STRESA and to Milan. About 5hrs depending on train times.

In SUMMER only:

bern to Interlaken to Meiringen to the GRIMSEL PASS. Over the Grimsel to Gletch then down the OberGoms valley to Brig. Then take the Simplon pass. This route will take longer but is very scenic.

If you do not want to drive there are trains several times a day between bern and Milan. Time taken is roughly 3 hours.
