Swimming in the Aare

I saw on Rick Steves that a fun thing to do in Bern was to float down the Aare in Bern. My questions are: where do you start and end; what do you do with your street clothes; how do you get back to your clothes; are there lockers available? We'll be in that area late August and early September.

Thank you for any help you can offer

This swim is indeed great fun and a perfect cool down on hot summer days. Best starting point are the public baths of Marzili. There are lockers and wardrobes. Here is the link (webpage only in German):

sportamt-bern.ch/Sportanlagen/…

From there you walk up along the river - just follow the crowds. Most people wear plastic sandals which they leave on for the swim, but if you are used you can do the walk also bare feet. Then you float down until you reach again Marzili baths. It's on your left hand - make sure to stick to the left side of the river soon enough as the current is quite strong. Again just watch what everybody else does and follow them.

Just some addons to ollers post.

The entrance to the Marzili is free, the lockers cost small fee.

Even there are a lot of people and even young teenagers it's nothing for beginners. Most people start swimming at the Eichholz park opposite of the local zoo Dälhölzli. There are many exit points along the way, specially at Marzili, where pulling yourself out of the water is easier.

You have to get out of the river at the Marzli as shortly after that at "Schwellemätteli" it's very dangerous (and forbidden) to swimm.
