Questions about Bern visit

I'm planning to spend a day in Bern; will have been in Spiez and was planning to just take the train for the day and return to Spiez, but am now thinking I will relocate to Bern so that I can spend the evening as well. This will have me in Bern on a Sunday. I see from a previous post that shops are closed, which doesn't concern me, but other than the museums is the city basically "shut down" or is there other activity? Also, I am booked at the Allegro Hotel and trying to get a sense of 1)its proximity to the city center and train station, and 2) if it's a smoky hotel (I noticed there is a Cigar Room located inside!). And any other suggestions for what to do on a Sunday afternoon/evening in Bern (in early May) would be appreciated, though of course I will do some research. Thanks!

The Allegro is a nice hotel (part of the casino complex). It's not in the old town but a short walk over one of the spectacular bridges will bring you there. The walking distance to the train station is probably about a mile.

There's usually not too much happening in Bern on a Sunday indeed; if you have good weather talk a walk through the old town and along the Aare river and go to a restaurant there, eg. the Schwellenmaetteli. And in bad weather it's definitely museum time.

Thank you! If most of the restaurants are open I will be OK! I just checked this one -- looks good but are they all so expensive??

Restaurants in Bern are no more expensive than in other Swiss cities.

The Allegro is very nice... and has a good Sunday brunch in case you are interested. It is about a 5min walk from the Kornhausplatz, over the Kornhausbrücke.

Here is a link to a walking tour of Bern...

Thank you! I have only just started my research so am unfamiliar with: Kornhausplatz, over the Kornhausbrücke. I'm assuming it's something nice! Thanks for the link -- here's hoping for good weather!
