An artist in Bern

I'll be in Bern for a week in July. I'm bringing my sketchbook and watercolors along. Any suggestions on where the best panoramas for drawing/painting might be? I would be happy for any suggestions!

Hi fellow Minnesotan!

I think the Lauterbrunnen Valley is gorgeous and tho I only take photos, I'd think to paint it would be very rewarding. I'm assuming you will be able to take day trips out of Bern? Let me think more on this and if you can give more info on your time schedule, I'll point some more your way.

Hi Cheri,

Are you from MN? I've been a resident Duluthian for the last 7 years but am originally from New England.( I do love northern MN!) In any case, thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I can do day trips from Bern, but am looking for spots either in or just outside the city as wellTake care, Marian

Hi Marian,

yes, originally from MN, but now live in Miami, but I still miss it. Bern itself is a lovely city and the old town is surrounded bya river so I'm sure you'll be able to find many spots from there. If you can make it to Luzern, it also has a lot of beautiful angles from it's river and lake looking at the mountains. I think pretty much anywhere you go in Switzerland will be breathtaking, but then it IS my fav destination. Do you have many guidebooks to look thru? I find EyeWitness Travel Guides to have some great photos and may give you some ideas. Have a wonderful time!!

Oh my, you will be spoilt in Bern...

Just a few classics: Rosengarten, Kursaal (on top of Hotel Allegro), Parliament building terrace (next to Hotel Bellevue), Marzili, Kirchenfeld bridge, Gurten, Bärenpark and nearly everywhere in the old Town.

Certainly not worth taking day trips when you have SO much to paint in Bern itself. To add to the great list Riehen has given you - I would do a series of paintings of the fountains of Bern. They are simply beautiful, very colourful and will be full of flowers when you are here.

You could go pay a few francs and go up the tower in the Munster. You only go to the first platform, but that is high enough!
