Best swiss restaurant in Basel for first-timers

Our hotel is close to Elisabethenstubli. May I have some more options? We would like to have fondue, raclette, rosti etc.. typical swiss dishes.

Thanks a lot!

Unless a real Basler is answering your request, Dafne, the best might well be to check on TA:

Elisabethenstübli is best for Fondue. average price.

Walliser Kanne at Gerbergasse is the only I know to serve Raclette. BUT: expensive. Menue in english

Restaurant Schnabel has an excellent Rösti and other local dishes. Many local guests. Menue in english.

Dear MAETZLI,

I just waited for a local to recommend, thanks a lot! Also the recommendation for Elisabethenstubli came from a local but I have three "problems" with this restaurant: I could not reach its menu- I know that their fondue should be great but one of my sons does not eat cheese at all so we wanted to know if they have other types of fondues as well but could not reach the menu. Secondly, since it will be our first night in Basel and maybe the first and last restaurant, I wanted the place to have more ambiance and maybe interesting location with some view (Rhine/cathedral etc). That restaurant looks like a good homey place to eat…

I will check your recommendations as well:))

Thank you very much Hambagahl &Swissdiver !!

this is why it is so dificult to answer these questions and I try to avoid them: each has his own criteria of what is best.

so, by the Rhein: http://www.sternen-basel.ch/

in a beautiful area, food ok-ish plus, service ok-ish minus

krafftbasel.ch/krafft/…restaurant.html

excellent food, ok-ish plus service, ok-ish minus area

ambiance and good food: http://www.restaurant-schnabel.ch/

also: http://www.gifthuettli.ch/betrieb.php and braunermutz.ch/e/…seite541.html

my favourites: Schnabel and Krafft

I dislike walliser kanne, service minus minus, food ok-ish, not worth teh price.

hope this helps a bit

Elisabethenstube offers different food, but not another fondue, such as fondue chinoise. no.

taksi's idea with Krafft is good, if you would like to see the cathedral. but there is no no fondue.

If you like a cosy, traditional athmosphere, then Schnabel is lovely with its wooden panels.

Dear Taksidiotis,

I am happy that you did not ignore my question, thanks!!

The word "best" is a bit problematic (too demanding and subjective)and I should not use it..Anyway, I checked your recommendations and they seem all great, especially Krafft which is really a beautiful restaurant inside and out(view), but no fondue. By the way my" non-cheese" son fantasizes about chocolate fondue.Where can we find that in general? coffee shops or restaurants?

Besides that, when each one of us gives his candid opinion, without thinking what others expect from him, the reader can decide accordingly to the common parts of the different recommendations. This time it is the common part of you and MAETZLI's opinion and the restaurant is Scnabel, the rosties there seem yummy.

Now I hesitate between Elisa… and Scnabel.

By the way, we will land at around 15:30 in Basel and would like to travel around for few hours(beginning of December). At what time we are going to be left alone on the streets? Some rumors tell that Basel "sleeps" early, is it right? at what time?
