3 and a half day in Basel

Hi all,

We are planning a trip to Germany and will stop by Basel to visit a friend. We will arrive Basel in the afternoon, so I am thinking to go to Kunstmuseyum on the first day. Then day 2, I am planning to go to Munster, Rathaus, University of Basel, Spalentor and Dreilandereck. We are trying not to go to so many museum due to budget and there will be more museum to go to in Germany (Don't want to museum out ;P)

Do you think it worth to go to Vitra Design Museum and Foundation Beyeler? Do you think we can go to these museums on day 2 as well? Also, is there any day trips we can take around Basel? The guidebook suggested Wanderweg for hiking, what do you guys think? How about day trip to Zurich? Freiberg? Bern?

Sorry for asking so many questions and any advises would be appreciated.

I post here the itinerary of a nice walk you could do, in order to see big parts of the old city center:

Take the tram no 2 to Kunstmuseum (art museum). and then take your tour through Rittergasse, Chatedral's place , the almost 1000 year old Münster with Pfalz behind it (Great view on the Rhine). Continue through Augustinergasse with Augustiner fountain, then turn left to - Martinsgasse with great Barock buldings turn left down the stairs to the Market square, visit the huge red Town Hall and (on the other side of the place) slip through Sattelgasse, Schneidergasse to a very narrow lane IMBERGÄSSLEIN up to Nadelberg, turn left walk down a few meters in Spalenberg and enter the - Gemsberg , where you find well preserved houses in different styles from all centuries, beginning in the 13th. On the upper end of Gemsberg turn right into Heuberg and walk 300 yards to a place called Lyss. There you will see in some distance the mighty Spalentor built in 1490.

Every house has it's own colourful history. Emperors and Kings stood here, a pope was crowned , the plague and wars hit the city, and an earthquake destroyed it in 1356. a.s.o.

Fondation Beyeler is in easy reach 15 minutes from the center. /tram no. 6 to Riehen.

Vitra is a very modern design museum in Germany. With bus no. 55 you start at Claraplatz. The trip to Vitra Design is 20 minutes.

Daytrips to Zurich, Bern, Lucerne, Freiburg ( Germany) Colmar (France) or Strasbourg (France) are also very easy to do.
