Basel from Salzburg via Zurich

I am having trouble figuring out the best way to get from Salzburg to Basel. The only one I can find that works is RJ162 Salzburg to Zurich (12:02 -1&:20) and then TGV 9230 Zurich to Basel (17:27-18:23). What are the odds of making the second train in Zurich station with only a 7 minute difference? I want to go through the Arlberg Pass during the day. Does RJ162 go through the pass? Any suggestions on which side of the train to be on?

We usually don't refer to trains by number here but by departure time. There is a train that leaves Salzburg at about 8AM with a connection in Zurich that is 14 minutes which would be more comfortable than 7minutes. If you aren't familiar with Zurich HB (the main station) and have luggage to move as well, 7 minutes can be a bit tight. However, there are several trains each hour from the HB to Basel so it really isn't very important to make a tight connection.

The only way I know to figure out if a train goes through a particular place is to look at all the stops it makes and then look on a map.

Hope this helps.

If you use the SBB site you can put in departure Salzburg, via Zürich HB and Basel SBB as your dstination. This should show all the connections. And even though Zürich HB is huge, 7 mins is about twice the time you need for any connection, except perhaps to some of the S-bahn platforms but this doesn't concern you!

Tips:

Book Salzburg to Zurich (by all means try Basel, it may or may not book you through to Basel) at www.oebb.at with cheap fares from €29 if you pre-book.

Incidentally, people should Use oebb.at for either direction in this Swiss-Austria route, as it offers self-print tickets and the Swiss site sbb.ch for some reason doesn't seem to show anything but the expensive full price.

Trains link Zurich with Basel at least every 30 minutes no reservation necessary or possible. So don't waste any more time worrying about the 7 min connection.

You arrive on time, you make it. You arrive 10 minutes late and you hop on the next train 30 minutes later, no big deal.
