Booking trains in advance?

We will be traveling from Lucerne to Paris via Basel on Sunday, July 22. We will be traveling on the SBB trains. Should we book our train tickets in advance or just buy them the day of?

Book the French TGV train in advance. They are often sold out and tickets cost less if you buy them some weeks or even month in adance.

For Swiss trians, no need to get anything in advance. Train reservations are not common for train rides in Switzerland.

The TGV Basel to Paris is reservation only which comes with your ticket. You need to book this now . Unfortunately as booking opens 90 days before departure there are probably no cheaper seats left.

You may be interested to know that the Swiss Rail website is offering a single fare Basel -Paris for 31 Swiss Francs. I didn't check which trains this was available for but it is worth checking further.

To put this into focus, the main issue isn't whether it will sell out (the Switzerland-Paris TGVs occasionally do, but usually don't). It's price.

Paris-Basel from €25 in advance, more like €115 on the day.
