Arriving Dec 23

Will it be worth it to stay? I'm arriving from a Rhine river cruise and given the time of the year, was wondering if all the places worth visiting would be open and how could we spend Christmas eve and Christmas? Would it be very cold? I know it snows. We're coming from Savannah, GA.

Also, any other cities nearby worth visiting during this time?

Thank you.

Yes, it is worth to stay 1-2 days. The biggest Christmas market of Switzerland is still taking place. It won't be that cold, normally.Maybe around freezing point in the evening. Snow is not guaranteed.

Lots of museums, cosy narrow lanes and very old houses (some 800 years).

Heavens! Why not? As Maetzli says, there is a great Christmas market and the chance to visit a terrific, small city with a wonderful Altstadt (Old Town) and tons of history. You can get a guidebook and do your own tour on foot or by tram so no need for a guide or organized tour. I think Maetzli posted one on the questions about Basel on the right here.

The hotels will have Christmas dinner (assuming you stay in one with a restaurant- you should for over Christmas).

There are various day trips you could take from Basel - Bern, Zurich or Lucerne. I would think about staying for a few days and going from Basel to Lucerne to see some of the mountains.

You can get lots of information on the Swiss tourism website in English

Hope this helps!

Basel is a wonderful city. It has a huge old town (where the market is at christmas) and abotu 40 different museums on all topics. There are lots of hotels to choose from and many really good restaurants.

While everything will be shut on 25 december, 24 December is a working day, though shops will close early. (Most people here celebrate Christmas on the evening of the 24th...)

In most places all will re-open on 26th. Some cantons though have a holiday that day as well but not all... In the mountains everything will be "jumping" and all shops, restaurants etc will be open. You can't plan on staying up in the mountains though as most hotels will require a week's booking at that time, at least. But Luzern is close enough to Engleberg so you could visit there. Only thing is, Engelberg isn't the most pretty of all resorts... you might want to consider Interlaken (not a place I normally recommend but it has a purpose here which is that it is close to but not IN the mountains and you will most likely get a hotel room for one or two nights! Also you can get there on a direct train from Basel. From there you can visit the car free villages in the Oberland - Mürren, Gimmelwald, Wengen - which are really a delight at Christmas and there there will be snow.
