Where To Stay??? Where to go??? - Last Minute Trip

Hello All,

My girlfriend and I will be staying in Basel this Saturday and Sunday nights. I am not sure which area to stay in. I'm currently considering either the Radisson or the Swissotel Le Plaza Basel, both are ok price wise. The Radisson has the benefit of pool, sauna etc but which of these is the better area? I am still open to suggestions on the hotel.

We are in our 30's and though not complete party animals, we would like to go for a good meal and a few(or more) sociable drinks. Which is the better area for food and drink? Any particular bars or restaurants? Though we are not Rockerfellers, budget isn't important to us as we are happy to indulge.

Also activities that are a 'must do'? Some shopping and then lunch whilst people watching will keep us happy but we are also looking for ideas. Maybe the fair, a river cruise, wine tasting or wellness centre? Any ideas will be appreciated as this is all rather last minute.

Many, many thanks.

Hi CheshireUntested

I'd prefer the Radisson, as it is near the real town center with lots of bars ( including two british pubs within walking distance).

Swissotel is ok too as a hotel but is situated on the northern part of the city. The surrounding area is mainly for fairs and not very beautiful.

Watch the historical town center on both hills next to the city hall ( at market square). Please read the inside pages for the itinerary.

Saturday will be still cloudy, but Sunday offers a lot of sunshine, so you can visit the Zoo.

At Barfüsserplatz not far from Radisson you'll find the Brauner Mutz" ( the brown bear), a great and well known beer hall with good food.

For wine tasting "Le caveau" offers a great variety of good wines. You pay per glass. Ask the hotel staff ; they will show you the way.

ENJOY!

It is always worth to book at guided walking tour through the city. You can book at the tourist center office at the Casino, 200 yards from Hotel Radisson. 2 hours approx.

Radisson. The plaza is Ok, but a bit further away from the center in lesser Basel.

Radisson gives easier walking access to the center and is in greater Basel (LHS of the Rhein).

Go to the Atlantis or Tis as the locals call it. This bar exists since ever and is cult in basel. Just around the corner from your hotel. We do not go much to bars ourselves - what we sometimes do at the beggining of an evening out, is go to the theater bar (open at performance intervals) and have a cüpli (glass of champagne) and do people watching. We stand at the corner and enjoy the view from the windows. Another favourite but more for coffee is the Huguenin. all in the area around Barfüsser platz.

Also in this area the Bröttli bar for light food or a drink and people gazing. goood for Coffee or drinks and Unternehmen Mitte

have a look here: http://www.basel-restaurants.ch/ (click on 1). Other suggestions:

Ramamen (a japanese ramen bar-very good) and Beschle a must (best coffee and sweets in town - very BCBG clients and very dangerous if you count calories) (click on 2 on the above link)

And be sure to do the following: walk to the Münsterplatz, then follow the Rittergasse and Mühlenberg to the shores of the Rhein. walk around the beautiful medieval quartier and go the paper museum (Papiermühle). For drinks or food check out the Goldene Sterne or the Papiermühle restaurant. Also in the same area and very Known are the St. Alban-Eck and the St. Alban-Stübli (click on 7, always the same link).

And /or cross the Rhein on the ferry and walk across the banks on the other side and have lunch-dinner a drink or coffee at the Krafft Hotel. If the weather is Ok (I am afraid that at the moment is very cold and snowing) sit outside.

Another cult bar in this area is the Fischerstube the brews its own beer and is also cult (the beer at least). (click 5)

Your hotel will give you a mobility ticket (public transportation pass) Take one of the trams and have a look around the City, I think that number 15 and 8 make a nice tour .

Browse this link for more ideas:

and ask anything else you want to know.

Enjoy your time here and I will keep my fingers crossed for better weather.

Tak

What a wonderful town inhabited by great people.

We managed to take in most of the tips given. The only places we didn't get to visit that we would have liked to was Le Cavaeu and Fischertube. We heard some great reports on Fishertube whilst we were there, I'm guessing another trip will be needed.

Who ever thought of the idea of Mobility Passes for Tourists is a genius. The tram was a great way to see the town. We just jumped on one and stayed on all the way around.

We had a great time and thank you all for your marvelous ideas.

Glad to hear that you liked it!

A recommendation: Next year, On Monday, 11th February 2008, our carnival will start again at 4 o'clock in the morning. It's great and peaceful fun. If you want to come back, make sure you book your room months in advance.
