3 days in Switzerland between Florence and Paris

Hi, my husband and I are travelling to Europe in Feb 14 and would like to make a stop in Switzerland for 3 nights coming from Florence and heading into Paris afterwards. I am torn between where to go as we only want to be based in one location, thinking Lucerne, Geneva or Zermatt. We prefer not to travel for too long on the train either to and from Florence/Paris. Any advice? Thank you.

You will be here right at the highest season (aside from Christmas) for skiing and it would be remarkable if you were able to get a room in a ski resort for three nights. Normally a week or longer is required by the hotel.

Anyway on top of that Zermatt is not the ideal place to choose for a base for sightseeing anywhere else in the country and neither is Geneva for that matter. Which leaves Luzern - which in fact is perfect to use as a base and not only that it is easy to get to from Milan. Take the train from Florence to Milano Centrale and change there for a train either to Luzern (a couple per day) or to Arth Goldau. You will need a reservation on the Florence-Milan and Milan-Arth Goldau trains. Change at AG for Luzern. Easy change of trains.

It will take under 2 hrs to get to Milan and another 3 hrs or so to get to Luzern. Which is about as fast as it is possible... And the line from Milan to Arth is extremely scenic... it is the historic Gotthard line which slices its way through the Alps.

From Luzern you can travel around central Switzerland and visit Bern, Basel, Zürich etc as well as mountains including Rigi, Pilatus and Titlis. All very easily. And Luzern is a very pretty place to stay.

For hotels see the Luzern tourist office website. It has a search engine and you can filter the results.

We have decided to stay in Lucerne though not via AG as the timing wasn't suitable. Thank you for your advice. :)
