Road conditions September Andermatt-Brigdown Rhone Valley?

We are thinking of driving from Lugano up to Andermatt then over into Rhone Valley by Obergoms, Brig, Martigny. Then straight over to Aosta in Italy - in late September this year. What are the road conditions likely to be like? We would be picking up a hire car in Italy, and so if winter/snow tyres are required, I am not sure whether the car would be equipped with these?

Any comments appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Absolutely NO problem. Late September is an ideal time to drive this route - I have done it frequently myself. Please stop in Martigny en route as we have a lot on offer...

What do you suggest are the highlights of Martigny. I had wondered whether it might be worth spending a few days in this section of the Rhone river valley. We spent 10 days in Aosta a few years ago in late September and loved it.

Aosta is amazing... And is the twin town of Martigny. Both founded by the Romans to guard the St Bernard pass. Please see my walking tour of Martigny on the TA sit e. (am traveling right now and cannot give you a link..)

From Martigny you are ideally placed to hike the Val Ferret, or val de Bagnes. Or go to Verbier. Or Chamonix for a day. Walk in our vineyards and along the Dranse or the Rhond. And we have the fabulous Fondation Gianadda , should you love art.. The sculpture garden is totally amazing!

Just think about the history of Aosta and Martigny. Linked by Augustus Caesar in 25AD.

I am thinking of doing this trip in early February. Has anyone driven it in Winter and will the road be open?

You cannot drive from Andermatt to Brig in February - the Furka pass will be closed. You can take the same route and put your car on the train at Realp and drive off at Oberwald. The great problem with driving this route though is that the Vallée de Conches - Oberwald to Fiesch - is very avalanche prone and the road often closes, sometimes for days at a time, in winter. So check carefully before you go.

If this road is closed you have the option to take the A2 via the Gotthard tunnel, then drive along the northern shore of lago Maggiore (Locarno to Verbania) and then up over the Simplon pass to Brig. The Simplon rarely closes even in winter - it has a lot of avalanche galleries and is relatively low at 2005m. It will bring you right to Brig.
