what are the the best cities to visit & what is the most economical way of travelling within the country?

We love mountains, lakes & exploring new places.

With just 4 nights I would focus on the Bernese Oberland (which is where Interlaken is). Interlaken itself has its advantages, but is not up in the mountains. I'm sure you'll be interested in heading up to enjoy the views and fresh air. You can learn more about this area on www.myjungfrau.ch

There are a number of car free villages in this area, and the famous Jungfraujoch is only accessible by train. Therefore, I'd recommend you use public transport. You can plan journeys using www.rail.ch

I'm sure others will be along with more tips and suggestions. What research have you already done? What is most interesting to you so far?

I am hard pressed to think of any advantage that Interlaken has save for easy access to transport - there are two railway stations there. Everyone thinks it is on a lake, which it isn't. What it does have are souvenir shops!! But if all you want to do is to sightsee outside of Interlaken, then it isn't such a bad choice.

A day trip to Bern, our capital city, is easy from there. And Bern is very very lovely. Here is a link to a walking tour of Bern:

tripadvisor.co.uk/Travel-g188052-c127052/Ber…

And you could easily combine this trip with a stop in Thun and a boat ride on lake Thun. (Thun is roughly half way from Interlaken to Bern, and the trains stop there. The boats are right next to the station!)

Another wonderful day could be spent at Ballenberg. This is an open air museum and will be still open when you are here. They have assembled buildings from all over the country there and you wander from one to another but most importantly, since you have little time here, it will give you a sense of the very varied architecture of the different cantons. www.ballenberg.ch

No trip to the Oberland should omit at least a day in the mountains. it is easy to get from Interlaken to either Wengen or Mürren. If you go to Wengen you can continue up the Jungfraujoch as NWL suggests. You should also plan, on this particular day (and choose a good weather day!) to stop in Lauterbrunnen and visit the Trummelbach falls which are very dramatic. You take a post bus from the Lauterbrunenn station for around 5-10mins to get there.

From Interlaken you could also make a day trip to Luzern, taking the very pretty Brünig pass line. In Luzern there is a small old town, very pretty, and a wonderful Transport Museum as well, of course, the lake.

Finally I would like to underline that the easiest way of getting around is by public transport. And if you buy a pass on the trains it includes lake boats and post busses as well as entrance to over 400 museums, including Ballenberg!

Definitely a great idea to buy either a Swiss Pass or a Swiss Flexi Pass. The passes can be bought either through raileurope or through the Swiss Travel System (www.swisstravelsystem.ch).

Also, if you have another day left on your trip, consider Lucerne. A very beautiful city on the shores of Lake Lucerne, surrounded by mountains, like for example Mount Pilatus, Mount Stanserhorn or Mount Rigi. The city centre is very historic and is definitely worth visiting. The boat cruises and cable car tickets for Mount Rigi are included in the Swiss Pass or Swiss Flexi Pass, and you get a 50% reduction for the cable car tickets to go up to Mount Pilatus or Mount Stanserhorn. http://www.luzern.com/en/index.cfm
