Gruyere and Broc from Lausanne

We are a group of 25 that will be in Lausanne for the World Gymnaestrada event this July. We would like to take a day trip to Gruyere and Broc. We would like to visit the cheese diary and Nestle Chocolate factory. We will have a full day.

Questions:

What is the best way of getting there and back starting in the center of Lausanne?

How long would it take us?

Any information about costs would be helpful.

On a half day that we would have we would like to visit Le Chillon Castle - is the Castle close to a train or bus? Best of way of getting there.

We are staying at College Elysee in Lausanne.

thanks for the help.

Hi tsawwassentra,

There are two ways to do the chocolate factory & cheese dairy from Lausanne. One way is to do it on your own, and the other way is to go to Montreux in time to catch their Chocolate Train, which departs at 09.12.

If you want to do it on your own, just use the Swiss rail site to get the train schedules

www.rail.ch

You would enter

From Lausanne

To Gruyeres

and then

From Gruyeres

To Broc Fabrique

and then

From Broc Fabrique

To Lausanne

All the schedules and transfers will come up. You can find out about the Cailler factory at their site

www.cailler.ch

For your trip to Chillon, take the train to Montreux. From Montreux, you can either walk, take a lake ferry, or take a bus. If you want to take the bus, just exit the train station, cross the street, and go down the stairs. Cross that street and stand with your back to the lake at the nearest bus stop. The bus is #201, and it will be going in the direction "Villeneuve." Your stop will be "Chillon." I think the fare will be around 2,00 to 2,80 per person. You enter the bus at the rear and pay using the machines there.

If you want to walk, just go to the lake and take a left. The walk is about 45 minutes long. I strongly encourage you to walk at least one of the directions, as the flowered lakeside promenade is one of the most beauitful aspects of Montreux.

Have fun!

When you look it up on www.rail.ch you'll see that the route goes Lausanne - Palezieux - Gruyeres. It's very easy to change trains at Palezieux (I can explain describe exactly how for peace of mind if you'd like), and then the narrow gauge train from Palezieux to Gruyeres passes through pleasant gentle countryside with the mountains beginning to rise in the distance. The narrow gauge train is a fairly small train, so it's possible that some of you may have to stand for a while until seats become free. It is not possible to reserve seats on this train, but you might want to contact sbb in advance to explain that a large party is travelling and to request assistance.

In Gruyeres, if you want to visit the demonstration cheese dairy, I believe they do like you to contact them in advance if you are a large party. It's CHF 6 per person for groups (or CHF 5 for students):

http://www.lamaisondugruyere.ch/

From Gruyeres to the chocolate factory at Broc is also not hard. You take the narrow gauge train to Bulle (a station you will have passed earlier), and change to an even smaller train for the short distance to the factory station - Broc Fabrique. This is a nice journey where you can get good photos of Gruyeres in the distance (on the right hand side of the train) and then have a Charlie and the Chocolate factory moment as the train sweeps round and you can see the long white factory (to the left I think). You will want to let the chocolate factory know in advance that you are a large party. Under 16s are free. Groups of adults are CHF 8 each:

www.cailler.ch/en/Home.aspx

You can then head back to Lausanne:

Broc Fabrique - Bulle - Palezieux - Lausanne.

Don't be concerned about making the changes on trains with a large party. These are small stations and it's all quite straightforward.

When you go to Chateau de Chillon, if it's a hot day, do bring your swimming things along. There is a nice grass and pebble beach off to the right of the base of the castle. It's lovely to swim in the lake looking up at the castle.

Have fun.

If I were you I would call or stop in and see someone at the CFF a couple of days before you make the trip because you will benefit from a group rate and possibly one or two free places on the journeys. They will arrange the group ticket and reserve space as needed. They are very good about this.

How long at each of the factories would everyone think is reasonable for time?

Only at Broc is there a factory and I would think about 90 minutes would be more than enough to get from the station go through the "tour" and get back to the station having sampled the chocolates.

At Gruyères there is a "Demonstration Cheese Factory" - with a not too bad cafeteria. Plan on an hour there. And then there is the village of Gruyères, on the hill. At least two hours, maybe more if you plan to visit the Chateau and its museum. Or have a meal. (Fondue of course!)
