Current Road Conditions in Switzerland

During the last days it has snowed quite a lot and more snow is predicted for today and tomorrow. Temperatures are low too (well below Zero C), so that it doesn't melt quickly. Due to the lack of salt throughout Europe, they stopped salting all roads. In Canton Zurich authorities have announced that from today they will salt only on highways. So be prepared for snow and ice also in the lowlands of our country, and even on main roads. Winter tyres are a must, and take snow chains with you if you have to drive on hilly roads. Eventually even here in Zurich area, for some difficult roads snow chains could be declared as mandatory.

The snow seems to be mostly in the west and north - on the plateau in fact! Here in the Valais on the plain the roads are totally clear. We hardly had any snow in Martigny and what was here has gone! The road up to Verbier is also totally clear though they did have a 20cm snowfall the day before yesterday.

I do hope the snow is over for the plain for this winter! We have had enough!!
