This winter there has been a LOT of snow, and not only in the mountains. Right now a serious weather "episode" is taking place. In the Valais with over 1 metre of snow falling between Saturday 20 Jan and Monday 22 Jan the entire canton has been placed on avalanche danger level 5 which is the highest possible level. Many places are entirely cut off. Zermatt, Zinal, Leukerbad, Morgins (on the Swiss side) to name just a few. In places that are not isolated roads are closed. Verbier is a case in point where several roads have been closed to all traffic because of avalanche danger.
Getting around on the trains can be difficult. In some cases impossible. In the Graubunden the rail line between Landquart and Scuol is closed. There are problems with the line Spiez/Goppenstein in the Kandertal. The line Villars/la Bretaye is not operating.
Anyone travelling in the next few days should check with the SBB to see if the train they want to take can run.
