Hotels with parking close to historic center

We will be in Perugia Oct 6-10. I would like to stay in a hotel that is easy to access with a car yet allow us to walk to the historic center with little difficulty. We plan to use it as a base to see other towns as well. When I look at hotels I have no idea how to figure out their location. Is there a land mark I should use as a reference point? would Orvietto be a better place to stay?

Perugia is a wonderful place to stay, especially in the historic center. If you go to Google Maps and search for "fontana maggiore, perugia" you will be centered on Piazza 4 Novembre. This is a good starting point for the center of the historical town. Running south from there is Corso Vannucci. This is a flat road running along the ridge of the hilltop until just past Piazza Italia. There are restaurants and shops along here with further shops on Piazza Giocomo Matteotti. There is the Hotel Brufani Palace which seems to get mixed reviews near Piazza Italia. The other point of interest on the map is the dotted line running south from Piazza Italia. This is the set of escalator (mostly subterranean), which connect the old town with the bus station and the parking station Piazza Partigiani. Three of us were if Perugia for Umbria Jazz in July of this year for 4 nights and stayed in Mini Resort Fontana Maggiore, an apartment near Fontana Maggiore. We were able to drive to Piazza 4 Novembre to unload, then at the suggestion of the owner, parked in Piazza Partigiani. This was 4 km away by road around the bottom of the hill, but only a 15 minute escalator/walk from the apartment on foot. It was 16 euros per day and was easy to get out to Assisi and Gubbio for day trips. There are a few hotels in the old town along Corso Vannucci and just to the left on via Bonazzi but I don't know if they have parking. However, we found Piazza Partigiani convenient and it is definitely worth staying in the old town. Even if you don't, it is worth taking the escalators through Rocca Paolina.

Also, forgot to mention that Perugia, as with most historic centers in Italy has a ZTL (limited traffic zone). Piazza Partigiani is outside of the ZTL but all of the hotels in the historical center will be within the ZTL and will need to provide your vehicle details to the local police to allow you to enter and exit without incurring eye-watering fines.

Perugia is wonderful but you will loose a lot of time driving in and out of town if you choose to stay in the historic centre, that is near Corso Vannucci.

Perugia is Umbria's capital and very busy during the day, not ideal if you want to drive in and out. I advice you to stay in the centre if you don't mind the extra driving and are planning to use a GPS.

If you do stay in the centre, make sure to take a hotel which offers free parking facilities as parking at Partigiani during the day is quite expensive (on average 1.5 euro per hour). Night is OK if you are away for the whole day (2 euro for whole night).

The very pleasant Hotel La Rosetta - where we spent New Year 2006/07 - could hardly have been any closer to the city centre...

Not sure how many, but they say they have parking spaces available...

We'd gone by train, so can't tell you what to do about the ZTL - but ask the hotel!
