You could have cold, sunny days but generally weather in January not at its best and often cold and wet. San Gimignano isn't far from Siena, 40 min drive or so, best done with a car. Numerous other villages and sensational scenery both south and north of the city but, again, you'll need a car and January not necessarily the best month to see them in.

Hello R0ng:

Last January, I was in siena for a day. While it was cold, it was a sunny day, very pleasant to walk the medieval city ...so lovely!

Hi,

about the weather usually is quite cold, about between -3 up 8 or 9 degrees during the day.

Is quite easy you are going to find landscapes covered in snow, fantastic to see.

San Gimignano is about 30 minutes of drive by Siena.

For sure you need a car, a small suv could be better so you are not going to be in trouble with ice on the road during the evening.

You can check to Aesserent, my favourite car rental company in south Tuscany area.

The convenience to visit Italy during th ewinter is that is cheaper, and, if you wear winter clothes, you are not going to find too much tourists on the road.

We really enjoyed Southern Tuscany with famous hilltop towns like Pienza, Montalcino, Montepulciano. The area is known as Val d'Orcia. We used Civitella Marittima as a base. We rented a house called Casina di Rosa, which we really liked.

Just plan on rain and then you will be delighted if it doesn't! We used Tours By Roberto for our tour around Siena. It was our favorite part of our Italina trip. Ana, our guide, picked us up in a van and we toured the Chianti area and small villages.
