You should really do a bit of research and decide what it is you want to see. If you want to visit Florence a couple of days, maybe Fiesole, Pisa, Lucca, then Chianti is a good base, the Greve area being particularly popular. If you are more interested in seeing Siena & the hill towns such at Montepulcino, Montalcino, Cortona. Then a good base is the Montepulciano - Montalcino region. There are lots and lots of wonderfull villas in both these areas, have a look on the net or order some brochures from the ads in the back of the travel section in the weekend boadsheets.

We found Siena to be a good central location. we were two couples with somewhat different interests - - we had been to Florence before and wanted to see more of the Tuscany towns and villages. The others wanted to see Pisa, Florence, etc. We each went our own way (2 cars), and met in the evenings back in Siena. Worked out beautifully, and we are still speaking to each other.
